Khara the Artist 

I’ve worn a lot of hats! 

I was born an artist in Dayton Ohio, became an activist in college, and graduated with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and no clearer ideas of what I wanted to be when I grew up but a deep desire to build community and decolonize my own mind.   I have always used creativity as a tool to manage my mental health and decided that I would fully embrace it as part of my identity when I moved to Oakland, CA in 2006.  I’ve worked with organizations such as Art and Action, YES! Youth Spirit Artworks, and the Mosaic Project.  Through this work my work as an organizer, and healer blossomed.  For 5 years I worked with Generative Somatics as a facilitator, and for the last 20 years I’ve worked with Be Present Inc. which has gifted me with understanding how to embody my authentic self, become a creatrix of play and aliveness and a liberated soul in a fragmented world.    

I am also a tarot card reader, a practitioner of Buddhism and African based theology,  and a co-creator of good things.

I am a Licensed marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Louisiana. I received my master's in marriage and Family therapy with a focus in expressive arts therapy from the California Institute for Intragal Studies and a bachelor's in Philosophy from Miami University of Ohio.

My approach is grounded in social justice theory and practices, Humanistic Psychology, Jungian theory, and Person-Centered practices. Her specializations include somatic therapy and expressive art therapy and I am a practitioner of Generative Somatics and a facilitator of the Be Present Empowerment Model. I work with individuals, adults, adolescent and children as well as couples and families. I welcome anyone interested in exploring and healing a broad spectrum of life experiences. These include: Identity Issues, Personal Empowerment, Self-love and acceptance, Relationship issues, Emotional and behavioral obstacles, trauma and abuse as well as life transitions and personal growth goals.
